Stop Missing the Sleep Window — Before the Meltdown Hits

Every baby has a perfect moment to fall asleep. Miss it, and you're in for a long night. Here's how to catch it every time.

The Sleep Window Is Real

There's a narrow window — sometimes just 10 to 15 minutes — where your baby is tired enough to fall asleep but not so exhausted that everything falls apart. Miss it, and you'll know about it. When babies become overtired, their bodies release cortisol and adrenaline to keep them going.

This makes them harder to settle, not easier. What looks like a wide-awake, wired baby is actually a baby who desperately needs sleep but can no longer access it easily.

Early Sleep Cues to Watch For

Early cues (act now): Slowing down activity, staring blankly, subtle eye rubbing, a single yawn.

Middle cues (act fast): Pulling at ears, fussing and grizzling, jerky arm movements, arching the back slightly.

Late cues (you've missed it): Full crying, inconsolable fussing, red-rimmed eyes, turning away from everything.

The goal is to catch those early cues before they escalate.

Wake Windows by Age

One of the most useful newborn sleep tips is understanding wake windows — how long your baby can comfortably stay awake between sleeps.

Newborn (0–6 weeks): 45–60 minutes | 6–12 weeks: 60–90 minutes | 3–4 months: 90 mins–2 hrs | 5–6 months: 2–2.5 hrs | 7–9 months: 2.5–3 hrs | 10–12 months: 3–4 hrs

Use these as a guide, not a rule. Watch your baby, not the clock.

What to Do When You Miss It

Even experienced parents miss the window sometimes. If your baby is already overtired: lower all stimulation immediately — dim lights, reduce noise, minimise eye contact. Motion often helps: rocking, gentle bouncing, a pram walk, or a short car drive.

White noise at around 60–65 decibels works well. Skin-to-skin can also help regulate an overtired baby's nervous system quickly. And once they're asleep? Don't rush to move them.
